Sarah Plavcan joined Legal Aid DC as a Staff Attorney in the Housing Law Unit in November 2024. Sarah began her legal career as an attorney with the AmeriCorps program, representing immigrants through the naturalization process at Project Citizenship in Boston. After her AmeriCorps term ended, she worked as an assistant public defender in Maryland, where she represented low-income criminal defendants at trial.
Prior to joining Legal Aid DC, Sarah worked at Rising for Justice, where she represented tenants facing eviction. Sarah graduated from Harvard Law School in 2018. During her time at Harvard, she worked as a student attorney with the school's Criminal Justice Institute and Prison Legal Assistance Project. She also interned at the Federal Community Defender Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Federal Public Defender, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware.
In between her time as a student attorney, she designed and created backdrops for the law school's annual parody musical. Sarah earned her B.A. from the University of Arkansas, where she majored in History and English and minored in Math and Legal Studies, while working at her local public library.
