Shakina Cotton joined Legal Aid DC in May 2022 as a Tenant Support Specialist in the Housing Unit. She provides support and services to Legal Aid clients who are experiencing housing instability and works with Legal Aid DC attorneys to support clients in eviction and subsidy termination cases. She also helps clients with completing applications for rental assistance, utility assistance, security deposit assistance, public benefits, and other paperwork.
Prior to joining Legal Aid DC, Shakina spent a short time interning as an Administrative Assistant for the Constituent Service Team for Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. There she communicated and coordinated with residents regarding issues they have escalated to the Councilmember’s office and helped get the issues resolved.
Prior to her experience at the Councilmember’s office Shakina worked in the community as a Security Officer where she performed administrative duties for different government and residential buildings.
Shakina graduated from Frank W. Ballou Senior High School in Washington, D.C. She is now attending Strayer University for a degree in Business Administration.
