Statement on Executive Orders Targeting the Legal Profession
April 3, 2025: A statement from Legal Aid DC on the recent executive orders aimed at law firms and the legal profession.

The legal profession finds itself in a moment of peril, with significant threats to the independence and First Amendment freedoms of lawyers, law firms, and legal organizations. Our legal system—and the liberties for all it is designed to protect—depend on lawyers being able to advocate for unpopular causes and on behalf of the powerless without fear of retribution. Efforts to erode this freedom undermine the rule of law, which in turn will hurt our most vulnerable residents and the cause of access to justice.

It is therefore critical for the legal community to stand strong against these attacks and rally in support of those who are standing up for the strength and independence of our profession and for the ability of lawyers to represent people and causes without fear. We are proud to stand alongside all who are doing so.
