Alison Shapiro
Accessing Unemployment Compensation Benefits
After losing her job, Alison Shapiro repeatedly tried to get her unemployment benefits. Unable to make headway with the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and concerned about being able to pay her rent and bills, she reached out to Legal Aid DC. Volunteer Staff Attorney Kathy Milton brought Ms. Shapiro’s case to DOES supervisors, and the agency issued most — but not all — of the missing unemployment benefits. Kathy continued to advocate for Ms. Shapiro until she had received all the back benefits she was owed.
