Inside Legal Aid

Legal Aid DC is supported by the legal community here in the District in many different ways. Over the last year, more than 200 attorneys have stepped up to provide pro bono legal services, representing clients in legal matters ranging from criminal record sealing to Social Security disability appeals.

Tim Cordova, an associate at Alston & Bird, has established a commitment to pro bono work early in his career, particularly in helping disabled individuals secure much-needed Social Security disability benefits and health care coverage. Many of his clients would have struggled to navigate the complicated legal and bureaucratic systems on their own.

When Legal Aid DC’s Pro Bono team refers a case to an attorney like Tim, that is not the end of the relationship. Legal Aid pairs pro bono attorneys with a mentor, ensuring they have access to subject matter expertise and trusted advice when they have questions.

Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Program has also led the relaunch of the Housing Right to Counsel Project (RTC). The RTC Project is composed of a coalition of legal service providers and law firms which aims to protect low-income residents with housing subsidies from eviction. Together, this coalition helps clients to assert their rights, access tools to stay in their homes, and prevent the harmful ripple effects of eviction while advancing racial and housing justice.

“At the end of the day, it’s about helping people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to legal representation. I feel fortunate to be in a position where I can use my skills to advocate for others.”
