Megan Ocean is a Staff Attorney in the Public Benefits Unit. They represent clients in a wide range of public benefits matters, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Medicare, and unemployment insurance.
Before joining Legal Aid DC, they worked as the Schedule H attorney at Legal Counsel for the Elderly, helping hundreds of low-income seniors obtain tax credits of up to $1,200 per year. They also volunteered with the DC Volunteer Lawyers project representing survivors of domestic violence in civil protection order cases, divorce cases, and custody cases.
They graduated magna cum laude in 2019 from American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL). During law school, they were a student attorney in the Gender Justice Clinic, working on family law and domestic violence cases in D.C., and in the UNROW Human Rights Impact Litigation Clinic on human rights cases before local and international courts. They also interned at Amara Legal Center and served as a Deans Fellow for the Gender Justice Clinic in the summers between law school. Before law school, they worked as a case manager at Friendship Place and as an adult education instructor at Briya Public Charter School. They received a B.A. in Psychology & Criminology/Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland in 2011.
